7 Things I’m Definitely Not Grateful For as a Muslim Woman
Thanksgiving is a time of reflection, and gratitude. As I sip on my overpriced latte, my first world problems fade away. We, as Muslim women, have so much to be grateful for. Here’s a little list of things that we definitely AREN’T grateful for:
1. Masjid Aunties
If I ever want to play 21 questions, I know who to ask. There’s nothing I love more than divulging personal information to relative strangers, while simultaneously having my appearance assessed for religiosity. Thank you for making the masjid so welcoming!
2. The TSA
Thank you for the extra time you put into my airport screening. Your thorough investigation of the “thing on my head” is first class…
3. Cardi B
Thank you for “corrupting” our Muslim youth. Luckily, the haram police were all over this. Now, if only I was driving a Lamb…
This was an historic election for Muslim women. We couldn’t have done it without you. Well…we probably could have, but your commitment to bigotry and racism has inspired a generation.
Wallahi brother, your explanation of what it’s like to be a Muslim woman today is so on point. The only thing that would make it better is if, ya know, it came from a woman. Please tell me again how #MosqueMeToo is irrelevant because Islam gave women rights 1400 years ago…
6. Well-Meaning People
“I love the thing on your head”.
“Oh wow. I didn’t realize you were allowed to do that …you know because of your religion and all.”
Thank you for making me feel so special. *facepalm*
7. Deen Squad
Thank you for unwrapping the worth of an entire generation of Muslim women. Modesty, class and spirituality are once again reduced to what we wear. Keep rockin’ that hijab all Thanksgiving long.
